The East Midlands Expo 2006 event itself has tried to be as sustainable as possible through; carbon offsetting against the residual emissions caused by the event, sourcing local food and by taking place at a venue very close to main public transport routes.
All food served throughout the day was sourced from local suppliers across the East Midlands. This not only reduced food miles but supported food suppliers in the region, food included Melton Mowbray pork pies, local meats, Red Leicester cheese. Where possible organic food was served and tea and coffee available throughout the day was fair trade.
Through the Carbonplus+ initiative the Woodland Trust are planting 150 trees at ten sites across the UK to carbon offset against the residual emissions created from holding Expo 2006. The valuable woodland created will grow to absorb and store CO2 pollution. In addition to the environmental benefits of absorbing carbon dioxide, as they grow and mature, the woodland will provide a rich and important habitat valued by wildlife and people.
