Duration : Ongoing

Summary: Groundwork Lincolnshire to deliver 6-7 open space environmental improvement projects under the Housing programme every 2 years. A Lead Consultant is to manage a programme of projects on time and to budget.

Year 1 of the programme was to carry out;

  • Community profiling and consultation to enable better scope for each project.
  • Establishment of a chairing stakeholder group for each project, landscape design and fundraising.
  • Year 2 of the programme was to deliver the project on site.

The projects have been developed for community gardens, wildlife gardens rich in bio-diversity, sports areas for young people, areas of play for pre-school children and pocket parks.

Background:

Lincoln City Council approached Groundwork Lincolnshire to deliver a programme of projects within areas of housing in the City of Lincoln, where a need has been identifiedfor improved public open space.

The housing and improvement areas are extremely varied, which has led to the programme having a net effect on the environment and communities across the entire city. Many of the areas identified have little public open space, or space that is in need of desperate improvements.

The project has also been able to take a strategic approach to the programme, by carrying out open space audits projects have been prioritised and which has enabled us to make more informed decisions on what we should do with the different open spaces.

Project Results:

The programme has created many new areas of open space for communities that did not have such facilities before the project. The project has also improved relations between different parts of communities, improved childhood development, increased community confidence and empowerment and enhancement and development of range and quality of parks, open spaces and play facilities.

The Housing programme is ongoing at present and many more open spaces are currently being developed.
