The Sherwood Energy Village (SEV) is the transformation of a former colliery site into a mixed use development of housing; industry and commerce; leisure, recreation and education. SEV is a positive re-use of former brownfield land. It is being developed to bring jobs and opportunities to the local community.
Ollerton Colliery shut in 1994.The settlement of New Ollerton had been built specifically to house miners with very little other employment other than two textile factories, now also
shut. Ideas forming the concept of the Energy Village came from the community - an Industrial and Provident Society was formed and after negotiation, bought the 91 acre
site from British Coal. Funding was also negotiated for reclamation works.
Construction has begun on site for offices and industrial units – some of which are already in use.Housing will also now be constructed. The SEV team have gained significant
skills in environmental technology, construction issues, biodiversity and the planning process. There is strong emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental stewardship using best practice methods in design and construction. Renewable energy sources also feature at the site.
SEV has been influential in bringing sustainable development to the East Midlands and in showing how Social Enterprises can achieve major initiatives.
