Arguably one of the biggest challenges now facing transport in the UK is the need to consider the impact of freight movements - not only to meet legislation and planning guidance, but also because more efficient and sustainable freight movements will strengthen our economy whilst reducing the impact on our environment.
Making the positive change required is not just about freight distribution. It depends upon society as a whole embracing different approaches – not a straightforward task.
Rapid advances in technology and the development of innovative new ideas will be encouraged, especially where they present significant opportunities for environmental improvements.
This is the first Regional Freight Strategy to be produced for the East Midlands. It sets out the key issues we must address and seeks to provide
a robust framework to allow the Region to move towards more efficient and sustainable freight movements.
An important aspect in delivering this agenda is the need to provide a robust framework for the implementation and further development of freight transport priorities – as required by Planning Policy Guidance. In this respect, the strategy therefore builds on the land-use and transport planning principles and priorities as set out in Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS8) and the Regional Transport Strategy for the East Midlands.
