Transport plays an important role in everyone’s life; for journeys to work, school, shopping and leisure.
The East Midlands has experienced the highest rate of traffic growth of any Region in England over recent years. In particular its central position has led to the main north-south routes through the region becoming more congested. East-west connections are also important to link to the more remote rural and coastal areas. Improvements to transport networks, highways, rail infrastructure and public transport services are therefore essential for the future prosperity of the region.
The Assembly has a Transport Group which is a partnership of regional stakeholders, and which regularly discusses key transport issues and provides advice to the Assembly’s Housing, Planning and Transport Board
An update to the Regional Transport Strategy was included within the Draft East Midlands Regional Plan which was issued for consultation on 28 September 2006. This includes policies relating to managing demand, highway and rail improvements, freight movements, and air travel. More information on these issues is included at the following links:
