Summary:
The restoration of an historically important townhouse to preserve the architectural heritage of this quarter of the city, enhance the working lives of employees of the practice, improve the service offered to and reduce anxiety suffered by patients was undertaken in such a way as to reduce the environmental impact of both building and business. The aim was to contribute towards the reduction in environmental load and reduce the cost of future escalations in energy and water prices.
Background:
The grade II listed Georgian townhouse had suffered unsympathetic “improvement”, botched repairs and removal and dame of original features. A solid brick construction was cool in the summer but difficult and expensive to heat. Energy was wasted due to poorly sealed windows, doors and roof. An unusable “landlocked” courtyard attracted vermin.
Park Dental Care, an established city centre business had outgrown its premises. Alternate premises, accessible by public transport, by foot from the city centre and residential areas were required. These had to offer multiple private consultation rooms as well as comfortable common areas.
Project results:
Combining restoration with improvements in insulation, heating, energy generation and recycling systems resulted in economies and allowed a comprehensive plan of energy systems to be implemented. Solar heat capture, zero carbon electricity sourcing and renewable heating fuel have resulted in circa zero carbon footprint. Thermal wall insulation, window and loft installation have reduced the financial cost of heating, whilst rainwater capture and storage for use in toilet and laundry supply has reduced the building’s demand for treated water, whilst reducing the load placed on the city drains.
The business has gained publicity and the employees feel positive about making a contribution.
