As the Regional Planning Body, the Assembly provides advice to Government on strategic land use planning and transport for the East Midlands. It also has responsibility for preparing and reviewing the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the East Midlands which includes the Regional Transport Strategy. This document provides a long term spatial planning framework within which Local Development Frameworks and Local Transport Plans can be prepared. The RSS also provides a spatial framework for other strategies within the region.
From September 2006, the Regional Assembly also took on responsibility for developing the Regional Housing Strategy, and for advising ministers on the distribution of the Regional Housing Pot.
