Waste to Resource Strategy
Transforming the way we think of and deal with waste
But great strides in the reuse and recycling industry mean we now have the chance to use waste as a valuable resource. Instead of being a problem it could make a real contribution to the economy and efficiency of the region.
Organisations including EMRA, East Midlands Development Agency, Government Office for the East Midlands, the Environment Agency and WRAP are working together to develop this approach. Their vision is to work towards making the East Midlands a zero waste region by 2020.
If you would like to ask questions there will be a small public exhibition in Crown Walk in Derby on Saturday February 20.
It doesn’t matter if you can only answer some of the questions, whatever information or ideas you can contribute would be a great help.
Waste currently costs the East Midlands £6bn a year – it is a serious environmental, social and economic burden.
Now they need to know what people think of the proposal and any information or ideas that could contribute to making it a reality.
More information about what is being proposed and what needs to be done next, can be found here in the
Waste to Resource Strategy Consultation document.
An
online questionnaire can be found here. Responses can also be submitted via email/post using this
Consultation form.
Please may we have your responses by 28 February 2010. They will be used to help to develop an action plan.

A Study into Waste Management Capacity in the East Midlands to inform the Regional Waste Planning Process
August 2009

National Study into Commercial and Industrial Waste Arisings
April 2009 Data on the amount of waste produced by business has historically been extremely difficult to obtain. The Environment Agency produced an estimate of the amount of commercial and industrial waste arising in England in 2002, but this information requires updating. In 2006, the North West Regional Technical Advisory Body commissioned a study from consultants Urban Mines to find out how much waste was produced in that region. In 2009, the Chairs of all the Regional Technical Advisory Bodies (RTABs) in England agreed to use this work to calculate how much waste is produced in each of the other English Regions. The study was funded jointly by all the English RTABs (other than the North West) with a steering group led by the East of England. This study was carried out by Glyn Jones of ADAS. Download:
