EXPO 2007
East Midlands Expo 2007 ‘Make Climate Change Your Business’ was held on 16th October at Rockingham Speedway, Corby.
EXPO in the East Midlands is an annual free event focusing on sustainability in the way the region works and lives to ensure the environment is protected for the future. This can be in the way we work, travel and even eat.
Expo has now been running for four years and has grown in size - this year more than 800 people attended with over 80 exhibitors.
The exhibitors included a wide range of businesses and organisations that are playing their part in improving people’s quality of life in the region. A wide range of products and services were showcased and demonstrated throughout the day, including promotional merchandise, energy efficient goods and services, local authorities, universities, local food producers, waste management products and services, construction companies and developers. A Producers Market was also held for the first time.
The day included a full programme of conferences, workshops and a meet the buyer session for the food and drink sector. The conferences and workshops addressed a range of appropriate topics, including sustainable construction, sustainable procurement, greener motorsports, becoming a green business and climate friendly communities.
As part of the Northampton County Launch of the Year of Food and Farming this years Schools Compeition focued onhelping children find out more about the countryside and where their food comes from through memorable, first-hand learning experiences! A shuttle bus service will run between Kettering Rail Station and The Willows Arts Centre in Corby to EXPO 2007 at Rockingham Motor Speedway.
The service operated by Corby VCS will have EXPO 2007 signs displayed in the window of the mini buses.

Food and drink firms took a key role in this year’s East Midlands Expo.
The event featured a regional producers’ market, arranged by East Midlands Fine Foods.
Stands were available free of charge to regional food producers. The market aimed to showcase the variety of products that are available on the doorstep, and how buying locally can help cut food miles.

The East Midlands Expo 2007 hosted a regional schools competition which involved schools across the East Midlands taking part in 'Finding Low Carbon Solutions'. The competition encouraged pupils to think about sustainable consumption, and how their school can make a difference, and ensure increased accessibility and sustainability for the future. Schools were encouraged to take the opportunity to access fresh seasonal produce from small and local producers and promote healthy living through the experience of food and farming and the countryside. A number of schools were invited to exhibit their work at Expo as it is important that everybody realises that they have an important role to play in promoting sustainable development.
The winners were:
Key Stage 1: had to grow something and then eat it!
This was to encourage thinking about where food came from and how to grow it. The winners were
Key Stage 2:encouraged thought as to where the food on the school menu came from and to produce a menu for the school from local sources to reduce food miles. The prizes were presented at EXPO 2007 by the Mayor of Corby and Chair of East Northamptonshire Councilincluded a set of giant planters and some seeds for school,a recycled plastic planter and some seeds,a Farm trip to Stonehurst farm and to Chatsworth Farmyard in Derbyshire.
