Egocabs Launch:

 

EXPO 2009 features the official launch of egocabs, the new ultra-modern style rickshaws now in Leicester. The official celebration will be led by the Lord Mayor of Leicester and will feature Media Out Of Home (the promoter of the egocabs), master of ceremonies Rob Gee, sponsors, live music and light refreshments. It forms part of the East Midlands EXPO as a high profile example of an environmentally and commercially dynamic new business initiative. The launch takes place at 1pm in the Keith Weller Lounge.

Schools and Homes Energy Education Project - Solar Active!

 

David Garlovsky is the project director of the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project/Solar-Active, a Sheffield/South Yorkshire based not-for-profit company and Charity. Solar Active has successfully developed an education method and resources making learning enjoyable - focusing on gaining knowledge, teamwork and enterprise skills through real life application of scientific and mathematical concepts. Encouraging careers in engineering. Proven useful with the hard-to-reach.

 

David Garlovsky will be doing a demonstration at EXPO 2009 - Tell Me, I’ll Forget, Show Me, I’ll Remember, Let Me Do It, I’ll Understand. Come and experience the inter-active renewable and energy efficiency resources: build a solar car & demonstrations, carbon-footprint and energy home & school surveys - trace an appliance running costs and determine how much energy each appliance is using.

 

This session will take place in the mini-theatre from 12:10pm to 13:10pm.

Rob Gee - The EXPO 2009 Compare

 

This year at EXPO we've got a compare with a difference. Rob Gee is a local comedian and worked with Groundwork at EXPO 2008 - Act on CO2.

 

Rob Gee -

 

Performance poet, comic, and reformed psychiatric nurse, Rob has clocked up over fifteen hundred shows across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America. He's performed with Harold Pinter, Tony Benn, Jimmy Carr and Jo Brand, and is sometimes sent into schools as a warning to children.  Rob's is the only performance ever to have instigated a fight at The Leamington Spa Peace festival.

 

 

 

Carbon Footprinting Stand -

 

The Carbon Footprinting stall provides a one-to-one footprinting service, allowing people to calculate an estimated individual footprint from their home heating, hot water and appliances, travel, waste, food and other goods and services. No bills or meter readings are required. It will provide advice and information on how to start cutting carbon footprints, as well as free certificates.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

East Midlands NTI -

 

This will be a series of demonstrations and exhibitions looking at Innovation in Sustainable Construction, including demonstrations from colleges across the region offering courses in new 'green' technologies.

Light Fantastic!

 

The Light Fantastic trailer will provide energy efficiency advice, as well as distributing low-energy light bulbs and ‘PowerDown' devices which can help to save money by automatically powering down computer equipment safely when you turn your computer off.

 

Visitors will also be able to try out the ‘energy bike' which helps to show how much physical energy needs to be generated in order to light up low-energy light bulbs versus regular bulbs. As well as the chance to see the full range of contemporary low energy bulbs available, there will be short films, information and interactive games.

  Local Producers Talks/Demonstrations:

 

Some of the Local Producers taking part in the Local Producers Market will also be giving talks and doing demonstrations. These are a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into the ways in which various goods are produced locally and perhaps even get to taste some of the fruits of the producers' labour.

Eco-School Award Ceremony at EXPO


Three schools in Leicestershire who are committed to ‘going green’ will receive their Eco-School Awards at this years EXPO event. 

 

Eco-Schools is an international award that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of the school. It supports the governments’ aim to make every school sustainable by 2020

 

Keep Britain Tidy administer the programme in England and have over 12,000 registered schools, making it the highest in the programme so far.

 

Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire, one of 41 Trusts across the UK, supports Leicestershire schools to become more sustainable, assisting many of them to achieve the Eco-Schools status.

 

Some examples of activities that the schools being awarded have undertaken to receive their awards include food growing; tree planting; recycling of paper, mobile phones and cartridges; litter picking in the local community and the installation of a wind turbine.

 

The Lord Mayor will be presenting William Bradford Community College their Bronze award, Highcliffe Primary School with their first Green Flag award and Market Harborough Church of England Primary School with their third Green Flag award.
