Introduction
The Sustainable Design Competition, run during 2005, is an innovative approach to engaging real practitioners in the sustainable building agenda. The competition illustrates how sustainable building design can be delivered practically and economically. This was achieved by providing an opportunity for architectural and design practices from the East Midlands to develop design ideas for a Sustainable Construction Centre of Excellence, based in Sherwood Energy Village, in Ollerton.
The Sustainable Construction Centre will provide training for all trades and professions engaged in building and construction from NVQ to CPD. The training will be focussed on bringing more sustainable methods of designing and constructing buildings into the mainstream.
All of the teams expressing an interest in taking part in the competition had the opportunity to develop their skills in delivering sustainable buildings through a programme of training events, provided in conjunction with the region’s universities. These training events highlighted the importance of a low carbon approach to buildings, issues of water resource, sustainable construction and flood resilience as well as the need to engage constructively with the local community.
The finalists from the competition received a cash prize of £2,500, and the opportunity to develop their ideas further and compete for the development of the Sustainable Construction Centre during 2006.
The partners feel that this project has helped the East Midlands region to respond to the challenges facing the development sector through enhancing the skills of design teams within the region to deliver a more sustainable approach to all projects.
